Isely Traditional Magnet Elementary School

Discipline Philosophy/Behavior Guidelines

The philosophy of Isely Traditional Magnet Elementary School is that learning takes place best in a structured and disciplined atmosphere. The BIST (Behavior Intervention Support Team) strategy is in use at Isely. BIST is a behavior program that supports having a consistent set of procedures for ALL students in the building so they are not confused by varying sets of expectations. Students are accepted and valued as individuals, but are also held accountable for their actions. The school needs the support of the parents for effective implementation of these behavior guidelines.

Students need to understand that it will never be acceptable to interfere with the learning of others. It will also never be acceptable to be hurtful to others either physically or emotionally. Guidelines and responsibilities have been developed to facilitate the learning of all students.

A. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

1.      Teach the child self-discipline and respect for authority, and to familiarize the child with the discipline policy and regulations.

2.      Encourage the student to report to the proper person (teacher, principal, etc.) any problems that develop, rather than resorting to hitting, etc.

3.      Be available for conferences; to pick up the child when necessary; and to provide the school with a current telephone number through which he/she can be reached during the school day.

4.      See that the child attends school regularly and on time, and prepared with the necessary materials.

5.      Cooperate with the school for the benefit of the child.

B. Student Responsibilities

  1. Never interfere with a teacher’s right to teach, and any student’s right to learn.
  2. Never hurt anyone, either physically or with words; never engage in bullying and harassment (physical force, verbal abuse threats, blackmail, etc.)
  3. Use conflict resolution procedures or report problem when necessary.
  4. Attend classes regularly, punctually with a positive attitude, necessary materials, and preparation.
  5. Be aware of and follow school wide and classroom policy, regulations, and guidelines for acceptable behavior.

C. Teacher Responsibilities

1.       The Isely staff will make classroom and building expectations clear to all through regular and consistent instruction before enforcement is needed; continued instruction regarding expectations will be ongoing throughout the year.

2.       When action is required, the teacher will conference with student about offending behavior and appropriate consequences.

3.       Those consequences discussed in the conference will be enforced.  These consequences will include but may not be limited to:

a.       Loss of privilege

b.      Utilization of in-class Safe Spot (BIST)

c.       Utilization of separate classroom Safe Spot (BIST)

d.      Student completion of Think Sheet (BIST)

e.       Teacher / Student processing of behavior, consequences and appropriately reentering classroom group (BIST)

f.       Contacting parent via phone call or written note (including email, when available)

4.       Administration will be involved when additional action is required.
